For more than twenty years I led teams in multi-unit retail, known for emotional intelligence and a gift for turning people other leaders had written off into champions. What few people saw was the cost of staying too long in places that felt familiar, because familiar is not the same as safe.
I have left a marriage that was breaking me. I have left a job that refused to see me. I have rebuilt from almost nothing more than once. I am writing now from inside that rebuild, which is exactly why I can speak to the women who are still in it.
